One of the last parts of building an airplane is to register it with the governing authorities (i.e. #FAA). I have had my N Number (N890GF) reserved for many years in preparation for registering it with my airplane. If you don’t have a reserved N Number, the FAA will assign a random one when applying for the #registration.
The FAA recommends submitted all registration paper work 60-120 days before completion of the aircraft (and inspection) to allow for enough time to receive the registration certificate.
The forms required to register an aircraft (amateur built or otherwise) are:
- FAA Forms:
- 8050-1 Registration Application
- 8050-2 Bill of Sale (in my case this came from Vans Aircraft)
- 8050-88 Affidavit of Ownership (This is for non-certified aircraft)
- Registration Fee – a Check for $5
Another document needed since I’m using my reserved N-number is a letter asking that that specific N-number is assigned to this registration.
Once all the information is filled out and is ready to submit, I sent these documents (after making copies) to the FAA Registration Office
FAA Aircraft Registration Branch

The Aircraft Registration Certificate will be needed to obtain the Airworthiness Certificate for the airplane.
